As you may all have noticed, we’ve been working hard the last few weeks in order to deliver some new features and make Linkdor.com one of the best places to promote your websites and business.

First of all we’re very proud to announce that Linkdor Page Rank has moved up and now it has the number of 3. That’s a very good achievement for a website that is only 6 months old. If everything goes fine we expect to move up to 4 at the next pagerank update.

As far as alexa rankings are concerned, traffics goes up exponentially, current alexa is 232,848.

As a directory owner I happen to see a lot of websites that subscribe to Linkdor Directory. Some of them are really good looking and useful resources. Others pretend to be. And what about the rest of the websites out there, I’d say about 45 % that are total rubbish!!! People, please don’t create something without purpose. Do you really think that directory submissions are useful if your site is not complete, if there’s no content on it or if it’s only filled up with adsense ads ??

Ok let’s not get nervous. I’ll give you some tips for starting a successful website, that every directory owner would be more than happy to approve.

First of all GOOGLE ADSENSE : it should be used moderately and what I mean by this is that when a visitor opens your website, google ads should NOT be the first thing that flashes right in front of his eyes! Some of you will probably say that google recommends putting the ads on certain places, where conversion is better. But after all, if you’re serious about making your visitors return, you should think about this. Put google ads but only on places where these ads will give the visitor more information, ralated links, additional reading etc. After all you know very well that adsense should be only your complimentary revenue source.

Content comes next. Real, Unique, Useful and user oriented. Remember that the primary role of your website is to share your ideas or whatever else with other people. So write for them, people often appreciate good content and are more likely to link back to you and recommend your website to their friends.

Promotion is the key for a successful website. There are hundreds and thousands of ways to promote your business. Simply don’t spam people. As long as you’re honest and careful everything should be all right.

Before doing anything else, I recommend to submit your website to web directories. This will fire up your website in the search engine results and maybe some pagerank.

Hosting is a well known problem for every webmaster. When you visit your website, your own baby and see that it’s not working, due to hosting problems, it’s like your heart stops for a while. If your entire business relies on your website, it’s essencial to have a quality web hosting solution. 99,9% uptime is not enough. We want to make it at least 100%.
Imagine what happens if the server hosting your website goes down, if the HDD(s) just stop working, and all the information you had on your website is lost FOREVER. It’s a catastrophic vision, it’s like the end of the world.
These are just some small reasons WHY hosting is very important. FREE and CHEAP reliable hosting solutions don’t exist. I prefer to pay an expensive one, because I’ll feel better all day long. It’s like an insurance that nothing can happen to your baby and everything is gonna be all right.

OK let’s come to the point, here I gathered a list of some of the hosting services I’m using and some of those I used before, that I’m very proud to present you.

Do you see those brand new flashing from all over banners? All web hosting companies are trying to get a part from the market. They’re all concurrents and do unbelievable things in order to get more and more customers. Nowadays hosting has become very affordable. The above hosting comanies are well known and very reliable. Simply compare them, thought there are no big differencies neighter in prices, nor in functionalities. At least you’ll be sure to have maximum security and a website running 24/24 hours.

DMOZ has been in the directory section for a while now, it’s the first link directory that came up and since then it has become the largest human driven web directory. Very often listings in Dmoz are used by search engines and they’re given more importance in search results.

Website promotion starts with directory submissions. DMOZ is FREE but it’s not easy to get a listing there, due to thousands of reasons, and first of all because there are millions of websites waiting for approval. To avoid waiting forever you shoud take some time to find the best category possible for your website. Then you MUST use your company or website name and write a good description.

Submission guidelines are very important, they may change depending on the categories, so make sure to read those very very carefully and make exactly what they say. Very often people just get their websites deleted just because they didn’t take their time to read the guidelines.

DO NOT submit again and again, your submission will be put at the back of the review queue if you keep submitting, or be deleted altogether! Don’t get fancy with the description, yes, try and incorporate your main keyword phrase or phrases, be careful though, too much keywords may look like crappy spa.

The description should adhere to their submission guidelines perfectly. You may compare it with other websites in the category you’re submitting to.  This way you can clearly see what exactly editors of this category are looking for and how can you make it look more natural. Make it short and to the point. Also, be sure to use an email from your site, like webmaster@yoursite.com.

This may help the editors know that this is a legitimate submission from an important person in your company, as opposed to if you use name@gmail.com as the submission email address. You don’t need to worry about being spammed. It’s unlikely you will ever hear from DMOZ via email. So use your real email address from your domain.

You won’t receive a confirmation if your site is accepted or not. Again, don’t submit it twice. Check in the category if your site is present or not. Note that sometimes sites get approved within 6 months or more. So don’t hurry so much, simply submit and wait.

If the category you are submitting to does not have an editor listed AND if the category doesn’t have a lot of listings, preferably less than 50 consider applying to become an editor of the category. As editor, you can approve your own site into the category very quickly.

Be honest in your application, the DMOZ people will research the information you give them, if you lie, you won’t get approved. If you are approved, be an honest editor, giving competitors a fair shot to be listed. You wouldn’t want a competitor keeping you out of the directory if they had the power, would you? Login a couple times a week to review new listings and to keep your editor account updated.

I hope those little tips will answer some questions I’ve been reading lately in most of the forums. But after all don’t worry so much about DMOZ. Your site still can be alive and gain visitors and pay back, even if you’re not listed there. I wish you good luck with your submission.
